Tips For The Beginning Gardener

Vegetable gardens have been around for centuries, and are a great way of keeping you healthy by providing you with fresh vegetables. The only limit to the kinds of vegetables you can grow is dependent on the environment you live in.

For instance, you probably won’t be able to grow lettuce if the temperature is too hot during the day, as lettuce requires cooler temperatures but still requires sunlight. With things like this in mind, planning your garden should begin with the types of vegetables you want to grow.

All vegetables require a certain amount of nutrients in order for them to be abundant. You can buy chemical nutrients and mix them into the soil before you plant, or you can go the more natural and organic route and use animal fertilizer, instead. A lot of proficient gardeners know that using animal fertilizer is the best way to produce an abundant amount of vegetables. One of the best fertilizers to use is sheep manure. It has plenty of nitrates and won’t burn your seedlings as easy as cow manure can.

Preparing the soil is one of the most important aspects of working your vegetable garden. If you have an area that has never had a garden in it before, this will be a lot of hard work for you. If the area is covered in grass you will need to remove the sod. Placing the sod in another part of the yard is a great idea. However, if you are just going to get rid of it, then you should shake the soil out of it in the place you are going to plant your garden. This will give the garden some rich soil to start the growing process.

Once you have the sod removed, you will want to turn the dirt over. This can be done by hand with a shovel, or you can use a tiller which will make it much easier on both you and your back. Once you have it turned over, you can then create the rows and start planting your seeds or seedlings. After that, it’s just a matter of keeping the weeds out and making sure it gets watered.

Make sure you plant your vegetables when they are supposed to be planted. All plants will come with directions on how deep to plant them and the time of the season that they should be planted in as well.
